How Do You Use Essential Oils for Fibromyalgia?

Using essential oils on a regular basis can be effective in providing pain relief as well as reducing fibromyalgia symptoms. Inhaling or diffusing essential oils help to reduce stress, insomnia, migraines, fibromyalgia flares, etc.

One of the ways to use essential oils is by cultivating an aromatic space in your home or bedroom. You can use an essential oil diffuser, especially in your bedtime routine to calm your body and mind for a restful sleep. If you don’t have an oil diffuser, you can do this by using cotton balls. All you need to do is pour a few drops of your essential oil into a cotton ball and place it in areas that you’d like the scent to waft in your home.

Other Ways to Use Essential Oils

I love that essential oils are small, lightweight, and portable. You can take them to work or when you’re running an errand. Some people (like me!) like to inhale the essential oil directly-you can do this by taking a few moments throughout the day.

You can also apply essential oil on your skin–as long as they are diluted, of course. These essential oils seep through your skin which alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms.

You can also consider pouring a few drops of your essential oil on a hot bath. And why not make it a bubble bath for an extra-soothing and self-care time? Warm water provides much-needed pain relief to your body. You can pour a few drops in bathwater and voila you got yourself homemade aromatherapy.

Risks and Considerations

It’s important to take note that essential oils are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, so that means the quality is going to differ from each brand. Choose the brand you trust!

Essential oils may smell so good and delicious, but make sure that you don’t ingest them because these oils are concentrated.

Test your essential oils before using them in case you get an allergic reaction. You can test the essential oil by diluting it with a carrier oil (like jojoba, almond, coconut, etc) and then put a few drops of the mixed oil on your forearm. If you experience no reaction, then you are good to go.

It’s always important to check for possible drug interactions.

Some oils (like citrus) can irritate your skin when exposed to daylight. If you are using an essential oil, such as citrus ones, you can use a carrier oil to dilute it.
